What every parent should know before buying children's multivitamins.
Most kid's supplements are loaded with colorings, dyes and sweeteners with very low potency vitamins. Many children's vitamins taste like candy because they basically are candy. They contain many ingredients that are found in most sweets. The ingredients of one gummy type vitamin included the following -glucose syrup, sucrose, gelatin and magnesium stearate. The traditional Gummi Bear candy is made from sugar, glucose syrup, starch, flavoring, food coloring and gelatin. Other common ingredients used in chewable vitamins are fructose, sorbitol, and cherry flavoring.
Many so-called 'children's vitamins' contain only tiny amounts of actual nutrients, and some brands entirely omit the vitamins that growing kids need the most.
Most children's supplements contain vitamins only. No minerals (though some do) and no amino acids (the building blocks of protein). To be 'complete' they should have vitamins, minerals and amino acids.Fillers and colorings - less is better - NONE is Best!
Children can sometimes have allergic reactions to the additives put in their vitamin pills. Parents should look for "hypo-allergenic" brands that contain no colorings or flavorings.
The Feingold Association has long recommended that parents of children who suffer from learning difficulties, ADHD or Autism, avoid artificial sweeteners, flavorings, colors and preservatives as these appear to aggravate their conditions. They say most ADHD problems come from the very same colorings, dyes, sweeteners and additives that are found in most kid's supplements! "Just wondering for what age range the Kids product is intended? My son is 14 years old. Thank you."
Answer
The ALL ONE Kids Formula is appropriate for ages 4 and over. If your son is a smaller 14 year old than I would stay closer to the child dose of 2 teaspoons, but if he is a bigger kid you could start upping his dosage closer to an adult dose of 1 tablespoon. Teenagers are always a bit tricky as they are growing so fast and on the cusp of having adult bodies. I often suggest our ALL ONE Original for active teenagers as it has a good dose of quality protein and additional iron as part of the formula, however, it is a dairy based product so it may not be appropriate for your son if he has allergies.
