"Psychodietetics”

Why taking a high quality multiple vitamin and mineral supplement like ALL ONE is an important part of any weight management program.

Over thirty years ago the role of nutrition in relation to health and well-being was only starting to come to light. The research was finally consistent enough that people started listening. One of the movers and shakers of the time was Dr. Cheraskin, who with Dr. Ringdorf and Arline Brecher wrote a book that pulled together much of the research of the time and presented the revolutionary idea that food/nutrition and mental/emotional wellness are connected. That the “diet doldrums” are not just because someone is hungry and wants to eat cake, that the bad moods, depression and anxiety are actually the result of brain cell starvation, altering one’s brain chemistry, sometimes permanently. They looked at weight problems, depression, addiction and unsociable behavior in both adults and children. They found that with high quality nutrient intake and an abstinence from processed foods, many once thought chronic conditions of a supposed mental source would correct themselves, weight would normalize and energy would be plentiful.

An Era of Dieting.

Chapter 3 of the book Pychodietetics looks at the effects that the dieting craze, starting in the 70’s was having on the population. How dangerous crash diets can be and how the effects can be long term. How the lack of essential nutrients to the brain cells can set individuals up for a lifetime of anxiety, depression, yoyo weight gain and loss and general unwellness.

The book asks, “What could be worse than carelessly eating your way into an emotional ailment? Eating your way into an emotional ailment deliberately!”

And yet that is what we do, blaming our weight problems purely on food quantities with very little attention to quality, not knowing that our distorted biochemistry is the possible source of our difficulties and that we are making it worse.

In 1974, there were 17,290 methods to reduce weight, these days Americans spend $33 billion annually on weight loss foods, products and services.

The weight loss market has grown into a huge industry and yet obesity has bypassed tobacco as the top underlying preventable cause of death in the USA. So what is being missed? Nutrition.

The body is a very complicated and intricate machine with many checks and balances all with the goal of staying alive, just alive, not healthy and vibrant. SO, when we subject it to starvation techniques, followed by binging on calories with very little nutritional content, then back to starvation, slowly but surely our nutritional bank account goes into the red and our bodies will make the appropriate adjustments to survive, even if this means 20 extra pounds or diabetes or osteoporosis or mental illness.

Medical experts have warned us of the health hazards risked by indiscriminate dieting and/or obesity: heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, kidney failure, gall bladder disorders, even cancer. And now it appears that we also risk our mental health.

Pychodietetics sites a number of studies that were done looking at the connection between diet and mental wellness.

In one such study, Israeli researchers evaluated 10 psychiatric patients. Six of the ten had never had any emotional problems prior to their first attempt at rapid weight loss. There appeared to be a direct correlation between the severity of their mental condition and the speed and amount of weight the patient lost. The researchers concluded that there must be a considerable incidence of less serious and, therefore, unreported emotional disturbances caused by dieting.

This theory was further explored by a study conducted at the University of Minnesota. Thirty-six men of normal weight were put on a 1500-calorie diet; these men were interviewed prior to the start of the study and were found to be a “highly idealistic, fun-loving, healthy” group. After six months, all of the subjects suffered from psychological deterioration. They became weak and irritable, apathetic, and antisocial. None suffered any physical complaints. A few exhibited such severe disturbances that they had to drop out of the study halfway through.

A similar study was carried out at the Mayo Clinic. A group of emotionally healthy young women who did not need to lose weight agreed to live together in the clinic under a doctor’s strict supervision while being fed a restricted diet for an extended period of time. In less than 90 days the women’s personalities had begun to change, they began experiencing unprovoked feelings of anxiety, persecution and hostility. Some had nightmares and others panic attacks. The doctor overseeing the study stated that he had “created a group of neurotics.”

It is important to note here that all these studies used healthy people, people who did not need to lose weight. What if you are someone who does need to lose weight, not necessarily healthy and already suffer from a certain degree of metabolic imbalance, in the end dieting will only make your condition worse, yes you may lose weight but at what cost and without adequate nutrition the weight is likely to come back.

Dieting for Health

With the multitude of diets being marketed out there how do you choose one that will help normalize, even optimize your metabolism, nourish your brain and keep you happy?

Dr. Cheraskin states that “any adult diet allowing an intake of fewer than 2100-2400 calories a day is likely to be deficient in some of the vitamins and minerals, and essential trace elements needed to maintain mental health.”

That is why if you are embarking on a weight loss regime the quality of your calories is as important as the amount of them. By nature we are more likely to eat less of nutrient dense food than processed foods full of empty calories. Psychodietetics recommends a diet of whole foods while avoiding processed foods whenever possible. This includes avoiding white flour, sugar, soda and all packaged foods. They also recommend a quality, high potency multivitamin and mineral supplement to help bridge the gap of previous deficiencies and to make up for the fact that vegetables and grains created through industrialized farming has less nutrient value than the vegetables and grains of the past.

Thirty years down the road this prescription for healthy dieting is still relevant. That is why ALL ONE multi vitamin and mineral powders should be part of your daily regime and even more importantly if you are one of the many weight loss seekers. Dr Cheraskin said it best “You can diet yourself into disaster, or you can diet yourself into optimal physical and mental health. You make the choice.”

Q & A

Question: I take the ALL ONE Fruit Anitoxidant Formula, and I have been told by my doctor to increase my Calcium intake, I would like to take your Calcium Complex but my daughter said I should get a Calcium supplement that has D in it for better absorption. Why doesnt your complex contain D?

Answer: The ALL ONE Calcium Complex is meant to be taken as part of a comprehensive supplement program, like taking it with one of our ALL ONE formulas. We do not include D in the Calcium Complex because it is already in our multiple formula, as it is in most quality multis on the market. So you will be getting plenty of D, it does not have to be taken with the calcium to help with absorption, you just need to have adequate amounts in your body. You also can get a considerable amount of vitamin D from the other foods you eat as most everything these days is fortified with D. You can also get a good dose of vitamin D by spending 10 minutes in the sun. So as you can see adding D to our Calcium Complex is not only unnecessary but it would be over kill.

Healthy Tip

Refined Foods- Missing something?

Refined foods. You may have heard the term, but what exactly does it mean?

It is a process where a once whole food is stripped of the very ingredients that could make it nutritious, and those ingredients are replaced with refined sugars, salt, excess fat, and chemical additives. In refined foods, all-important fiber is usually deleted. Fiber is important because it helps guard against constipation by increasing the volume and fluid content of stools, and it may work with certain types of bacteria to inhibit the formation of cancer cells in the colon. Some types of fiber, found in oat bran, beans, apples, and grapes, may lower elevated blood cholesterol. The National Cancer Institute recommends 20 to 35 grams of fiber per day. The average American is consuming only about 12. Fiber is also very filling, so you don't have to eat as much to feel full, which cuts down on the amount of foods you need to eat overall.

ALL ONE Totally Fiber Complex is a tasty blend of both soluble and insoluble fibers making it supportive to both your colon and cardio vascular system. You can use it just like food adding it to your cereals, salads or even cookies, making it an easy way to be sure you are getting enough fiber every day.
