Walk for Better Emotional Health

What if someone told you there was a free, easy and relaxing way to increase your energy and self-esteem as well as elevate your mood? Well, there is, and it’s simpler than you think. Walking as little as 30 minutes, three times a week can accomplish all of these things and more. Numerous studies have shown that walking correlates with increased energy, better moods, health and nutrition and increased self-esteem. In fact, Dr. James Blumenthal, Ph.D of Duke University, says that walking can be just as effective in relieving the symptoms of depression as standard treatments of anti-depressant drugs.

Despite these known health benefits, many people have trouble finding the time and/or motivation to start a walking program. Here are some tips to make your new program an easy reality:

1. Start slow. Even if you can only walk a few minutes at a time before you need to rest remember: it’s not where you start from, it’s where you’re going that’s important. Make sure to do some easy stretching beforehand and start your program gradually.
2. Make it a routine. Research shows that it takes 21 days to establish a habit; the first three weeks are very important. Work walking into your schedule and stick with it!
3. Make it easy enough to maintain. Some people’s reluctance to start an exercise program stems from previous attempts where they started and failed to continue. This is usually due to high expectations and energy in the beginning of the program, followed by a “burnout” period. Start with simple, easily reachable and sustainable goals so you can keep the habit in the years to come.
4. Incorporate walking into your daily schedule. You don’t always have to walk specifically for exercise. Kill two birds with one stone by walking to the post office or grocery store for example. Give your kids some exercise as well by walking to school to pick them up. If you take public transportation to work, try getting off one stop earlier and walk the rest of the way and make an effort to take the stairs instead of the elevator.
5. Use walking as a way to meet with people. Instead of meeting at a coffee shop or lunch, ask your friend to go on a walk with you. You can enjoy each other’s company and get in on the latest gossip at the same time.

If walking is already part of your daily routine and you want to spice things up a bit try intermixing a light jog or faster pace at intervals throughout your walk. Or, if you want to see some new scenery, look up local hikes for your area and walk new paths.
