Keep your kids turbo charged this summer.

Finally summer is here, kids are out of school and straight into a multitude of activities to keep their minds and bodies a-movin'.

During the school year our children are challenged with school and extracurricular activities. Nutrition plays a vital role in keeping their grades up and their bodies healthy. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are part of a daily routine. But what happens during these wonderful carefree summer months; with so much fun to be had they are out the door before breakfast, often lunchtime goes unnoticed and dinner may be at a friends house after a day at the beach. The fun factor often wins out over good nutritional choices. A healthy diet during childhood and adolescence is an important factor in helping to prevent the development of a number of diseases in adulthood such as obesity, iron deficiency anemia, coronary heart disease, hypertension, dental caries, osteoporosis and cancer. Don't let summer fun put your kids at risk.

The summer growth spurt.
It is often during the summer months when we see growth spurts in adolescent children. These spurts require huge amounts of nutrients to support. It is during this time that teen-age boys and girls need more calories and nutrients than at any other time in their lives. Puberty - about age 10 to 12 for girls and 12 to 14 for boys - is an intense growth period that brings dramatic changes in height and weight. Because body mass almost doubles, adolescents are particularly vulnerable to even modest levels of energy restriction. Your child's metabolism is in overdrive and even if they are eating regular meals you have probably noticed it still never seems to be enough. Despite the availability of recommended, age-specific dietary guidelines for adolescents, it can be difficult to estimate energy and nutrient needs, since both are closely related to a youngster's growth rate or biologic age, rather than his or her chronologic age.

This is the time when using a powdered nutritional supplement like ALL ONE can really make a difference. Protein shakes and smoothies seem to be a form of food accepted by the teenage crowd. Whether they are weight conscious, athletic, or a summer school bookworm kids can find time for a smoothie or shake. This is your chance to ensure they are getting the important nutrients they need to reach adulthood healthy. Common deficiencies during this time include calcium, zinc, iron and B vitamins. The repercussions of these deficiencies show up in the form of depression/stress, hyperactivity, poor concentration, fatigue, skin breakouts and stunted growth.

Little brothers and sisters need a boost too.
In contrast to the big kids it may not look like much is going on with these little guys but we know on the inside a lot of energy is being used. Unfortunately, this seems to be when they are the most picky about their foods and likely to skip meals. As their activity levels increase over the summer months, sneaking in a morning or afternoon shake with ALL ONE is a great way to ensure a base level of nutrition is being taken care of. Disguised as a chocolate, banana milkshake they will never suspect.
