It is not just about the carbohydrates.
Nutrition is key, take your "low-carb" lifestyle
to new levels with ALL ONE powders.
Have you discovered the many wonders of the "low-carb"
life? Dress and pant sizes that you never thought you would own are
now finding their way into your wardrobe. Maybe you started an exercise
program feeling more confident in work out gear. Wearing clothes and
doing things you really never thought you would do. You feel better,
look better and are pretty stoked.
So how does it all work, it's not magic. The more you understand the
inner workings of the "low-carb" solutions clogging the
airwaves the more you will be able to maintain your new found size
with health and vigor.
The underlying concept at the base of all "low-carb"
diets is that insulin is what makes you fat, so if you can control
your insulin you will be able to control your weight. Insulin is one
of the most powerful and potent hormones our bodies produce. Insulin
plays such a powerful role because the brain requires glucose (carbohydrate)
to survive. The human body evolved during a time when carbohydrates
were scarce and certainly never processed so the body needed a powerful
hormone to be sure to make the most of the sugar when it was consumed.
Now we zoom ahead to modern day man who not only has processed carbohydrates
available at every street corner, carbohydrates have become a staple
in most people's diets. They are cheap, filling and taste good, what
more could we want from a food. Unfortunately, our bodies did not
evolve at the same pace as modernization. Insulin still functions
as if carbohydrates are scarce that is why we are getting fatter and
fatter.
This is how insulin works:
Insulin is released from the pancreas in response to high blood sugar
levels. Blood sugar levels increase after we eat or drink foods that
contain carbohydrates. Insulin is responsible for lowering the high
blood sugar levels back to a normal range by "unlocking"
the cells so they can accept glucose to burn for energy. Insulin also
stimulates the storage of energy in the body by "turning on"
the production of fat, glycogen (carbohydrate storage in the Liver)
and protein, fat being the easiest and most prolific.
Remember that this system evolved out of a place of scarcity so what
happens in today's modern world of abundance? The body has continued
to adapt but not in a way that is healthful- it has been forced to
switch from a place of thriving to one of survival. With the frequent
consumption of processed carbohydrates, insulin and the mechanisms
it controls are forced to work in a manner they were never meant to.
The common fat around the middle physique that we are all battling
is a direct result of the body's carbohydrate metabolism pushed to
its limits. Unfortunately, the process can gradually breakdown resulting
in what is known as insulin resistance. This is a condition in which
the insulin receptors of your cells no longer respond well to the
insulin, they are worn out, so blood sugar levels do not effectively
drop and blood levels of both insulin and glucose stay high. Without
the receptors willing to take up the excess it is converted to fat
over and over again. This fat is then stored and dispersed throughout
the body. Some of the fat is sent directly to your thighs, bottom
and belly for long- term storage. The rest is made into fat particles
that circulate in your blood endangering blood vessels.
Control your carbs!
But it's a mistake if you stop there. "Low-carb" diets work
because they brake the negative feedback loop set up by the unnatural
intake of processed carbohydrates. This is a good thing. Unfortunately,
the "low-carb" diet does not address the nutrient deficiencies
that can be caused by such a metabolic overload nor do they address
the future need for additional nutrients not available in the multitudes
of shakes, bars and pre-made "low-carb" food alternatives
available. Processed carbohydrates do not contain much nutrition,
neither do processed "low-carbs".
